County seeks “Bacon Capital USA” bragging rights

The pig may be big in Martin County, Minnesota, but some civic leaders believe bacon will officially put the pork production powerhouse on the map.

Members of the Bacon Capital Committee have been busy creating new initiatives to celebrate Martin County as Bacon Capital USA. The stats are impressive: Martin County produces 40 million lbs. of bacon per year thanks to more than 150 pig farms, according to the Bacon Capital USA website. Farmers there sold more than 1.7 million market pigs in 2016.

Bacon Capital USA already has a mascot: a pink pig that has made appearances at the Martin County Fair and, more recently, before boys and girls varsity hockey games thanks to a partnership between the Fairmont (Minnesota) Hockey Association and Bacon Capital USA. Future initiatives may include a bacon festival.
